The world’s first commercial all-weather level 4 shuttle bus software will be released in 2022

Finnish self-driving technology company Sensible 4 will launch a commercial autonomous driving software product for public transport, for last-mile shuttle buses in restricted areas. The first commercial release of Sensible 4’s autonomous driving kit solution, Dawn, works in all weather conditions and will be on the market in 2022.

Finnish self-driving tech company Sensible 4 will release the first commercial all-weather solution in the autonomous technology industry. Dawn is a true level 4 self-driving software product – the vehicle doesn’t need a safety driver.

“This first release will have remote assistance and it works both day and night in all weather conditions, like rain, snow, sun, and fog” states the CEO Harri Santamala.

Dawn can be utilized in any 4-wheel vehicle, but Sensible 4 has focused on the last-mile shuttle busses as they will be the first active area in the market. The software is easily integrated into shuttle bus platforms and on-demand services. It enables dynamic routing inside geofenced area: “This means, the shuttle bus can pick-up and drop off passengers inside the area but outside the actual routes.”

Sensible 4’s software can be easily integrated into any vehicle. On the screen, it is seen the mapping view.

Built for the last mile

Dawn utilizes Sensible 4’s superior positioning and navigation. The product is made for public and private last-mile transportation service in a restricted area, for example, in industrial parks, airports, and campuses. It’s aimed at shuttle buses that carry 6-20 passengers.

“No purpose-built infrastructure is needed. Dawn enables driving in mixed traffic with a maximum speed of 40km/h”, Santamala explains. The product has the in-trajectory overtaking capability and it provides easy integration to shuttle bus platforms.

One major issue for autonomous driving is the weather. Sensible 4’s has solved the problem and the software works in all weather conditions.

Driverless in all-weather

Sensible 4 has been testing and piloting actively, for example in Finnish Lapland, which is known for its darkness and snowy weather, and also in Pasila, which is a busy urban area in Helsinki. Piloting continues soon in Lapland and Norway, next year also in the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and Japan.
“The pilots are carried out for learning and development, they are increasing in complexity to be ready for the commercial launch”, Santamala underlines.
