Employee Story – Antti, Head of Research
What is it like to work on cutting-edge autonomous driving software? Head of Research at Sensible 4, Antti Kangasrääsiö, tells us what it takes to be part of a fascinating deep-learning-based automated driving project.
Hi Antti, what is your background and role in the company?
I have a MSc in Automation and PhD in Machine learning, as well multiple years of industry experience in deep tech startups. I am currently the Head of Research at Sensible 4.
Can you tell us about a recent project you enjoyed working on?
I am currently leading the development of a deep learning based all-weather object detection system.
This is a challenging project, as it requires us to develop a large amount of supporting infrastructure required for data-driven software development, such as data collection, selection and annotation; model training, hyperparameter search and performance evaluation; embedded software integration, latency optimization and performance monitoring. Getting all these pieces of the puzzle working seamlessly together is a very interesting problem to tackle.

An example of what you have learned working here?
The technologies in the autonomous driving space cover a wide range of technical disciplines, so there is always something new to learn.
For example, last year we were researching methods related to friction-adaptive vehicle velocity control, to improve the robustness of our product in slippery weather conditions. This required diving deep into models of tire-road interaction dynamics, which was a new topic for me.
